What to Wear to a Bahá'í Funeral

There is no prescribed dress code at a Bahá'í funeral. The faith asks for modesty and dignity rather than uniformity, and guests of all backgrounds are welcomed. A few simple choices will help you feel comfortable and show respect for the family.

Dress code at a Bahá'í funeral

The Bahá'í Faith does not prescribe a particular colour or style for funeral attire. Bahá'u'lláh emphasised moderation and cleanliness in dress, and that principle carries through to funerals. The expectation is simple: dress modestly, dress with care, and let your appearance honour the moment.

In most Western countries, Bahá'í funeral guests dress much as they would for any other funeral: dark, subdued colours are common, though not required. In communities with a stronger Persian heritage, you may see soft greys, muted blues, and creams as often as black. Bright colours and patterned prints are generally avoided, but a cheerful tie or scarf in memory of the person who has died would not be out of place.

There is no requirement to cover your head, for any gender. If you wish to wear a head covering for personal or cultural reasons you are free to do so. Comfortable, walkable shoes are sensible. Many services include a graveside burial.

Appropriate dress

  • Smart, modest clothing, a suit, dark trousers and a shirt, a dress or skirt at or below the knee.
  • Muted colours: black, navy, grey, charcoal, cream, or soft pastels are all suitable.
  • Long sleeves or a light jacket are a thoughtful choice, especially for graveside services.
  • Closed, comfortable shoes for walking on grass or gravel at the cemetery.
  • Minimal, understated jewellery and grooming. Quiet is the right tone.
  • If you wish to wear a head covering for personal reasons, you are welcome to, it is not required.

What to avoid

  • "I'll wear something bright to celebrate their life." Unless the family has asked guests to do so, brightly coloured or patterned clothing can feel out of step with the reflective tone of a Bahá'í service.
  • "It's only the graveside, I'll dress down." Casual clothes like jeans, shorts, trainers, or athletic wear are best avoided. Aim for the same care you would take for any formal occasion.
  • "My dress is short, but it's elegant." Very short hemlines, low necklines, or strappy tops can feel too informal. Modest, covering clothing is the safe choice.
  • "It's warm a T-shirt will do." — Visible logos, slogans, beachwear, and very casual T-shirts are not appropriate. A plain shirt or blouse is better.
  • Heavy perfume or cologne. Services are often in small or enclosed spaces and strong scents can be intrusive.

Frequently asked questions

Is black required at a Bahá'í funeral?

No. There is no required colour. Black is common in many countries and is always a safe choice, but any modest, muted colour is welcomed.

Do women need to cover their heads?

No. There is no head-covering requirement for any gender at a Bahá'í service. If you wish to wear a scarf or hat for personal or cultural reasons, you are welcome to.

Can children wear ordinary smart clothes?

Yes. Children should be dressed neatly and modestly, school-uniform-style clothing or any tidy outfit in muted colours is perfectly suitable. There is no need to find dedicated funeral attire for a child.

Is it appropriate to wear religious symbols from another faith?

Yes. Bahá'ís recognise the spiritual unity of all faiths, and wearing a cross, a Star of David, or another personal religious symbol is not considered disrespectful. Keep it modest in size.

What should I wear to the gathering after the burial?

The same clothes you wore to the service. Bahá'í post-burial gatherings are usually held at the family home and remain quiet and reflective, so there is no need to change.
